AN UPDATE ON THE THIRD MEDICAL MISSION TO CATANDUANES

JUNE 24 - JULY 2 1999

A REPORT BY THE CHAIRPERSONS OF THE MEDICAL MISSION

Dr. Erlinda C. Velasco and Dr. Virgilia A. Guerrero

The team of some one hundred volunteers led by our president, Dr. Romy Velasco arrived safely in Manila on June 20, 1999. A meeting for briefing and acquaintance of all volunteers with some special guests ( donors, hosts and patrons ) was held at the Quezon City Sports Club. The following day an army plane flew the volunteers along with the 72 balikbayan boxes of medicines and other medical supplies to Virac. Some of the volunteers proceeded to the northern town of Viga where two days of consultation for over 600 patients was done. A continuing medical education was held over the weekend at EBMC which was attended by local doctors, nurses and allied health professionals. Dr Norma Villeno conducted the CME. In the five days that we were stationed at EBMC, we are happy to inform you that the following medical and surgical works were done.
  • Major Surgeries.................................97 cases
  • Minor Surgeries..............................138 cases
  • Cataract Cases...................................17 cases
  • Medical and Pediatrics................3002 cases
We would like to salute all the doctors, nurses, pharmacists, technicians, our lay volunteers and the youth for their unwavering support in making our task lighter and a pleasant one thus making our mission a very productive one. The EBMC Chief of Hospital and its staff, the Physicians for Peace, the Ugnayan ng Pahinungod and the Congressional Spouses Foundation likewise need special mention for their job well done in association with the Catanduanes International Association.

The volunteers were treated to sumptuous dinners and entertainment by the town Mayor, the Congressman, the Governor, EBMC staff and a host of civic minded people of Virac. It was indeed a refreshing experience after a hot and humid day of work. To all our hosts, we offer you our sincere thanks.

The volunteers had fun shopping for native handicrafts and native delicacies as the hospital compound was turned into a mini-mall for the convenience of the volunteers. To all the vendors and their coordinators, thank you for all the fun we had.

We would like to share with you some pictures of our bothers and sisters in Catanduanes who were the recipient of our labor of love in the last 3rd medical mission. To the many that we have left behind untouched by those healing hands, we deeply regret that time had to cut us short... but keep in mind that the healing hands of God is always by your side.

It is rather difficult to mention all the wonderful and beautiful names of all the people who made this medical mission a successful one but allow us just to say...
To all the Volunteers
To the staff of EBMC
To the Government officials
To all our Hosts
To the Parish of the Immaculate Conception
To all our Donors and Patrons
To all the Wonderful People of Catanduanes

Dr. Erlinda C. Velasco

THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS !
